Population status

Hutton's Vireo
(Vireo huttoni)

The Hutton's Vireo is poorly monitored in Canada, in part because of its small range in south-western British Columbia. Analyses of data from the Christmas Bird Count were not available for this species. The Breeding Bird Survey is the best source of monitoring data available though the species' primary singing period, February through April (Davis 1995), does not match the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) survey period (late May – early July). BBS results suggest an increase of slightly more than 100% since the early 1970s, although the small sample size and annual fluctuations in the population lower the precision of the trend estimate. BBS data from throughout North America also indicate an increase in the continental population over the same time period, but at a smaller magnitude than in Canada. The Hutton's Vireo is considered to be at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see Canada graph below).
