Population status

King Eider
(Somateria spectabilis)

The Eastern and Western Arctic populations of King Eiders are thought to be demographically distinct since they winter in different areas. Because of the remoteness of the breeding and wintering habitat of the species there are no annual surveys covering the King Eider in North America. Instead, population estimates and trends for the Western population are based on counts obtained approximately every 10 years during spring migration at Point Barrow, Alaska. Estimates for the Eastern population are based on wintering-ground monitoring programs conducted off the coast of Greenland. The continental population is estimated at 600,000 individuals (North American Waterfowl Management Plan 2012). The King Eider is at an acceptable level relative to its national population. Detailed information on the population status of waterfowl species is available in the Population Status of Migratory Game Birds in Canada report (summarized version).
