The most reliable source of monitoring data for Least Flycatcher in Canada is the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), although it covers less than half of the breeding population. Results demonstrate a steady, long-term decrease in the national population since 1970. However, because of the lack of coverage in the northern portion of the species' range, the reliability of the estimated trend is assessed as medium. Results from Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) that host the species and for which there are reasonably reliable results (displayed below) suggest that Least Flycatchers are showing large declines in most regions, except for an increase in the Great Basin BCR and a relatively stable population in the Prairie Potholes BCR. BBS results from throughout North America also indicate a large decrease in population at the continental level. The Least Flycatcher is below the lowest acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see Canada graph below).
