Population status

Marbled Godwit
(Limosa fedoa)

The majority of Marbled Godwits nest in grasslands of prairie Canada and the United States; areas with good survey coverage by the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS; Gratto-Trevor 2000). However, the BBS does not cover the small population of breeders in James Bay. The BBS indicates that Marbled Godwits have exhibited a moderate decrease in abundance in Canada since 1970. In the Prairie Potholes Bird Conservation Region (BCR), which supports the highest population density in Canada, the population has shown a long-term, large decrease with a loss of almost 60% of the population. In contrast, the small Boreal Taiga Plains BCR population has shown a large increase over the long-term. However, though this trend has good precision, BBS coverage of this BCR is not as good as in the Prairies. BBS results from throughout North America show a slightly negative trend, though the magnitude of the trend is considered to represent little overall change in the continental population since the mid-1960s. The Marbled Godwit has been below the lowest acceptable level relative to its national population goal since the mid-1980s (see Canada graph below).
