The Mallard is primarily monitored in its core breeding range through the Waterfowl Breeding Population Habitat Survey, as well as the Eastern Waterfowl Breeding Ground Survey. The species is also monitored by other smaller-scale breeding waterfowl surveys across Canada, including the Waterfowl Breeding Population Survey of the Central Interior Plateau of British Columbia, the Southern Ontario Waterfowl Plot Survey, the St. Lawrence Lowlands Breeding Waterfowl Survey, and formerly the Cooperative Yukon Roadside Waterfowl Breeding Population Survey. The Mallard population has been expanding eastward for decades and is now well established in New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. The population recovered from the decline observed in the 1980s, but dropped again in 2001 to below the North American Waterfowl Management Plan (NAWMP) goal of 8.2 million birds (North American Waterfowl Management Plan 2012). However, the population has remained above its NAWMP goal consecutively since 2009. Both eastern and western populations have national population goals; and both are at an acceptable level relative to their respective goals. Detailed information on the population status of waterfowl species is available in the Population Status of Migratory Game Birds in Canada report (summarized version).
