Mourning Dove

The Mourning Dove is well monitored in Canada by the Breeding Bird Survey, the results of which shows a 44% increase in the population since 1970. Population growth was relatively steady until the early 2000s when it began to level off. At the regional level in Canada, the largest increases occur in the Atlantic Northern Forest followed by the Lower Great Lakes / St. Lawrence Plain, Boreal Harwood Transition and Prairie Potholes Birds Conservation Regions (BCRs) while populations in British Columbia and the Boreal Taiga Plains BCR show large decreases. The majority of the species population lives in the United States; continental BBS results, that largely reflect the U.S. population, indicate little overall change since 1970. The Mourning Dove is at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see BBS Canada graph below).
