The Northern Waterthrush is best monitored in Canada by the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) although the northern portion of the species' range is poorly covered. Still, for the range covered, the BBS provides good precision in the trend estimates and indicates that the population has shown an approximately 60% increase in abundance since the early 1970s. Results from individual Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) show a tendency for increasing population trends in the west and prairie regions, and stable to decreasing trends in eastern Canada. BCRs with highly reliable trends are displayed below. The Northern Waterthrush is at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see Canada graph below).
