Orchard Oriole
(Icterus spurius)

The Orchard Oriole is well surveyed by the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), which covers more than 80% of its breeding population in Canada; BBS results indicate that the population has undergone a dramatic and continuous increase throughout its Canadian range of over 400% since the early 1970s. However, the majority of Orchard Orioles breed in the United States and, in contrast to Canada, the continental population has experienced a 30% loss in abundance. This loss occurred mainly before the mid-1990s, and the continental population has been roughly stable at that lower level since then (see graph in table below). The Orchard Oriole is at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see Canada graph below).
