Population status

Prairie Falcon
(Falco mexicanus)

The Prairie Falcon is best monitored in Canada by the Christmas Bird Count (CBC), which suggests an increase in abundance of about 54% since 1970. However, the CBC in Canada covers only a small portion of the potential wintering range. Breeding Bird Survey results supplement the CBC, despite moderate precision of the trend estimate, and also suggest an increase in population. Overall, the Prairie Falcon population is best assessed as having shown a moderate increase in Canada relative to about 1970, and because of the agreement between the two surveys, this assessment is considered to have high reliability. Because the Prairie Falcon was persecuted and affected by DDT (Farmer et al. 2008), resulting in low levels of abundance at the start of monitoring efforts, and its historical abundance remains unknown, a specific management goal relative to 1970 has not yet been set. However, with an increasing population trend, the Prairie Falcon's current population is at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see Canada graph below).
