Population status

Rock Ptarmigan
(Lagopus muta)

The Rock Ptarmigan inhabits arctic and alpine tundra, primarily outside of regions captured by long-term surveys. Although quantitative trend data are lacking, it is unlikely that populations have changed dramatically relative to 1970. The species remains widespread and common across vast areas of the Arctic. Moreover, because the species is hunted by Inuit, it is likely that any large change in population status relative to 1970 would be known. Because of the lack of information on population status, a population goal has not yet been established for this species.
