The most reliable survey for the Scarlet Tanager in Canada is the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS), which covers about 80% of the species' breeding population in Canada. BBS results indicate that though the national population has experienced a small decrease since 1970, it is within the levels considered to be little overall change. At the regional level, results vary somewhat among the Bird Conservations Regions (BCRs) for which there are reasonably reliable BBS results (displayed below); from a decrease of 41% in the Atlantic Forest BCR, to relatively stable populations in the Lower Great Lakes / St. Lawrence Plain and Boreal Hardwood Transition BCRs. The BBS results for North America show little overall change in the continental population over a similar time period. The Scarlet Tanager is currently at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see BBS Canada graph below).
