The Spruce Grouse is not well monitored by any one survey in Canada, due to its northerly distribution and secretive nature. However, both the Christmas Bird Count (CBC) and Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provide some information about this species. CBC results, which may provide somewhat better coverage than BBS, suggest that the Canadian Spruce Grouse population has increased in abundance since about 1970. BBS results indicate a population increase of greater magnitude over the same time period. The Spruce Grouse is perhaps best assessed as having shown a moderate increase. However, the reliability of this assessment is ranked low, due to poor coverage of the northern breeding population and low precision of the results of both surveys. The Spruce Grouse is thought to be at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see CBC Canada graph below).
