Population status

Spotted Sandpiper
(Actitis macularius)

The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) provides the best monitoring data for the Spotted Sandpiper in Canada. However, because the BBS does not provide complete coverage of this species' extensive breeding range in northern Canada, this assessment is supplemented by results from the Shorebird Migration Monitoring program. Both programs indicate a long-term, moderate decrease in the population since the 1970s. BBS results demonstrate varying levels of decrease among the Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs), with the exception of the Prairie Potholes BCR, which shows a large increase (all BCRs with reasonably reliable results are displayed below). BBS results from throughout North America indicate that the continental population is also showing a decrease. The Spotted Sandpiper is below the lowest acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see BBS Canada graph below).
