Population status

Thick-billed Murre
(Uria lomvia)

Thick-billed Murres are monitored through Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Seabird Colony Monitoring Program. Long-term monitoring data are available for several colonies in the Arctic and Atlantic portions of the species’ Canadian range. Colonies in the Atlantic appear to have changed little relative to the 1970s, while those in the Artic have increased moderately (see below). Results from the Atlantic colonies are slightly more reliable because they are based on a longer time series, so the status of the Canadian population is perhaps best described as having changed little relative to 1970. Incomplete coverage by these counts, however, means that results are only moderately reliable. The Thick-billed Murre is at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see Atlantic coast graph below).
