The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the best available source of data to monitor the Western Bluebird in Canada, despite covering only about one-third of the Canadian population. The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) provides a secondary source of information although the precision of the CBC trend estimate is quite low. Results from both surveys suggest this species has undergone a large increase in population since the early 1970s. The overall increase has occurred despite the disappearance of small coastal populations of Western Bluebirds in British Columbia (Campbell et al. 1997). BBS and CBC results from throughout North America also suggest an increase in the continent-wide population, though at a much smaller magnitude than in Canada. The Western Bluebird population is is at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see BBS Canada graph below).
