The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the most reliable survey for determining the population status of the Western Kingbird in Canada. BBS results indicate that while the population has experienced inter-annual fluctuations, there has been little overall change since the early 1970s. However, at the regional level, BBS trends vary widely. The three Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) with reasonably reliable BBS results (displayed below) show contrasting results; numbers in the Prairie Potholes and Northern Rockies BCRs are stable and increasing, respectively, whereas the population in the Great Basin BCR has experienced a large decrease. The majority of the species' breeding range is within the United States. BBS results from throughout North America indicate a relatively stable population trend across the Western Kingbird's continental range. The Western Kingbird is at an acceptable level relative to its national population goal (see BBS Canada graph below).
