The Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) is the most reliable survey for determining the population status of the Western Wood-Pewee in Canada, although coverage is poorer in the northern parts of the species' breeding range. Like its counterpart, the Eastern Wood-Pewee, BBS results demonstrate a large decrease in abundance of Western Wood-Pewees since the early 1970s. At the regional level, only the Great Basin Bird Conservation Region (BCR) shows a stable population, while all others are showing decreases (results for all BCRs with reasonably reliable BBS results are displayed below). The Western Wood-Pewee is also declining across its continental range, as shown by the BBS results from throughout North America. The species has been the lowest acceptable level relative to its national population goal since the early 1990s (see BBS Canada graph below).
