Notice is hereby given that pursuant to the provisions of section 74 of the Species at Risk Act licence no. DFO-PAF SARA 159 is issued.

Purpose:
Scientific research for the conservation of the species

Description:
Authorized representatives from DFO, the Animal Health Center and the Vancouver Aquarium are licensed to collect for diagnostic purposes: all tissues, organ fluids and/or blood of dead salvaged parts or surplus material collected from dead marine mammals and turtles.

Pre-Conditions:
a) Alternatives: The collection of genetic materials and parts from dead marine mammals is non-invasive, as it does not disturb live whales in their environment. There are no better alternatives to acquiring the same information. b) Measures to minimize impact: All activities will be conducted by qualified personnel. c) These activities will not jeopardize the survival and recovery of any species. Diagnostic data will improve understanding of the marine environment, animal health, and anthropogenic threats to their recovery and survival.
