Notice is hereby given that pursuant to the provisions of section 74 of the Species at Risk Act licence no. DFO-PAF SARA 160 is issued.

Scientific research for the conservation of the species

Authorized representatives from DFO and the Vancouver Aquarium are licensed to disentangle pinnipeds, cetaceans or sea turtles from fishing gear and other debris of human origin.

a) Alternatives: To benefit the species, the authorized activity is the best method to increase chances of survival of a marine mammal in the wild from anthropogenic events. b) Measures to minimize impact: Only qualified vessel operators and experienced research personnel trained by DFO in the appropriate methods of marine mammal disentanglement will be in attendance. c) Effects on survival and recovery: The temporary impact to a marine mammal outweighs the risk to the animal if actions were not taken and will not jeopardize the survival of the species.
