Scientific research for the conservation of the species
This project involves surveys of an Indian Reserve for the presence or non-detection of Coastal Giant Salamanders (Dicamptodon tenebrosus). The Inventory Methods for Coastal Giant Salamander formulated by the Resource Inventory Committee will be strictly followed to complete these surveys.
Start Date: 2004-08-17 End Date: 2004-08-30
Issuing Authority: Environment Canada
- Species at Risk Act
Location of Activity (province, territory or ocean):
- British Columbia
All reasonable alternatives to this activity have been considered, all feasible measures will be taken to minimize the impact of the activity on the species, and the activity will not jeopardize the survival or recovery of the species. To minimize impact, the Coastal Giant Salamander will not be handled directly. Species are directed to a dip net using the downstream flow. They are then transferred to a Ziploc bag with stream water for snout to vent measurements. Once measurements are taken, they are returned to the point of capture (adults) or slightly upstream from the point of capture (larvae). This activity identifies areas of occurrence and opportunities for habitat restoration that will increase total population size on the reserve for these species. Therefore, it will in no way jeopardize the survival or recovery of the species.
